History of the Festibuga festival

The history of the festival begins in 1971 when several bugueños took the initiative during the National Farming Fair in Buga. In it, it was decided that a romantic music meeting would be held to improve commerce and promote culture. The first stage in which it was held was the Maria Cristina de Buga Theater, where the champion Carlos Alberto Lopez Arango was crowned champion. Later, the festival grew and had the governmental support of the municipality and the Colombian Institute of Culture. For this reason, the festival moved in 1974 to the Bernardo Romero Lozano Acoustic Shell, with more space for presentations. Although the idea was to have only national interpreters, over time it was expanded to bring international artists. In 1976 international artists were brought for the first time and in 1982 a new acoustic shell was inaugurated, specially designed for the festival.

Since then, national artists such as Libardo Carvajal, Rafael Navarro, Fernando Salazar, Juanes and Shakira have participated in the festival. Also, international interpreters such as Palito Ortega, Jose Luis Rodriguez El Puma, Vicky Carr, Marco Antonio Muñiz, Jose Jose, Natusha and Raphael have passed through the festival. Currently, Festibuga is in charge of the National and International Foundation of Interpreters of the Song of Buga. This organization is in charge of the logistics, the call, the development and the awarding of the festival. For the contest the trophy is called The Old Hermitage “Lord of the Miracles” and it is handed out in addition to a prize in cash.

Today, the Festival, which will be held at the end of August, has many attractive plans. Once again, it will be held at Bernardo Romero Lozano Acoustic Shell and the awards will be the Hermitages “Lord of Miracles” of gold, silver and bronze. National and international artists are expected to arrive, including singers from countries such as Argentina, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and the USA. Other countries such as Cuba, Venezuela and Chile can also send representatives. This time it will have support from the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Culture of the Department and the Mayor of Buga. It is considered that this festival is, along with the Festival of Viña del Mar, in Chile, one of the most important in Latin America. For the musical presentation it is required to interpret a folk theme and a romantic song, usually a ballad.

For the public, this is an opportunity to see consolidated and new artists, as well as knowing the municipality. In addition to the musical contest there will be local and international orchestras and bands that will liven up several Buga spaces. We recommend you to be aware of the schedule and book the accommodation in advance. Although the entrance is free, it is also advisable to present in advance to have good places. In previous editions, the festival has counted up to one thousand five hundred attendees. In any case, the whole city dresses up as a festival in August, so there will be cultural activities everywhere. For example, there is also a Festibuga Beauty Queen and free concerts in parks and squares. Come to the Festibuga and do not miss the culture and music that Buga brings to you!
