There are few places in the world so important and, still, so underrated. So full of beauty, nature, archaeological treasures and legacy, and, at the same time, hidden to millions of people. The Chicamocha Canyon is a steep and gigantic canyon that surrounds the Chicamocha River and it’s one of the greatest natural wonders in Colombia and the world. It is located between Bucaramanga and San Gil, two beautiful towns inside the department of Santander. The Canyon is so impressive and jaw-dropping that, in the next years, it’s highly likely that it’ll be recognized as World Heritage.

One of the Largest Canyons in the World

The Chicamocha Canyon, believe it or not, is among the biggest canyons in the whole world. It is as big and beautiful as the Grand Canyon, but not as famous. It’s a little bit more difficult to visit, but, at the same time, it’s quieter and more peaceful. It extends over 200 kilometers and covers a little bit more than 100 thousand acres. It can only be defined as “majestic”!

A Natural and Archaeological Gem

Millions of years ago, the Chicamocha Canyon used to be covered by a big lake, filled with animals and species long gone extinct. Nowadays, with the lake gone, scientists see the canyon as one of the most interesting and valuable places in Colombia for biology and geology. Fossils can be found there, as well as traces of the changes that the canyon went through time. The Chicamocha Canyon is, without a doubt, one of the natural treasures that hides countless stories for scientists and experts.

Not only that, the Chicamocha Canyon was also the home of several indigenous settlements that carved the history of Latino cultures hundreds of years before the Spanish and Basque Colonization. According to expert archaeologists, the Chicamocha Canyon served as the home for the Guane people, an extinct culture. Having the chance of explore other cultures through the findings inside the canyon is, certainly, an enviable treasure.

How Can I Get There?

As we said, it’s not always easy to see all the wonders inside the Chicamocha Canyon. If you want to visit the canyon, you can choose any of the following options:

  • If you just want to have a quick look, you can pass by it on your way to Bucaramanga or San Gil, with your car or a bus ride. It’s the easiest way but, perhaps, not the most immersive.
  • If you want to have a controlled visit -that means, with just a few spots available for you to wander around-, you can go to the Chicamocha National Park. There, aside from the various lookouts, you can have a 20-minute ride on a cable car.
  • If you want to have the absolute best view of the canyon, you can paraglide through it. First, you have to get to the “Voladero del Cañon del Chicamocha”. Once you’re up there, you can start your paragliding adventure.
  • At last, if you want to see the canyon up close and you’re up for the adventure, you can hike your way up the canyon. It’s not easy nor fast. It can take up to three days, but you’ll have the chance to see everything. Definitely, it is something you should try once in a lifetime!
